Key Highlights From The Report

  • Sector Medians for Benchmarking: The report includes sector medians that serve as benchmarks, allowing organizations to compare their sustainability performance against industry standards.

  • Concentration of Emissions: A significant 90% of reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions come from just four sectors: Cement, Metals, Power, and Wood & Paper. This concentration underscores the urgent need for targeted strategies to reduce emissions in these industries.

  • Underreporting of Environmental Metrics: The analysis reveals substantial underreporting, with 34 companies reporting no energy consumption and 219 companies failing to report Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This gap indicates a critical area for improvement in transparency and accountability.

  • Scope 3 Emissions: Only 223 companies provided data on Scope 3 emissions, which account for over 80% of GHG emissions in several sectors. This highlights the necessity for businesses to focus on their entire value chain to develop effective decarbonization strategies.

  • Water Consumption Variance: The report shows a staggering 100x variance in water consumption intensity across sectors. For instance, the Wood & Paper sector has an intensity of 3,500 KL/₹ Cr, significantly higher than sectors like Financial Institutions and ICT.

  • Gender Representation and Wage Disparities: Female participation in the workforce remains low, with only two sectors—Healthcare and IT/ITES—having women employees exceeding one-third of the workforce. Additionally, wage ratios for women compared to men vary significantly, with the IT/ITES sector reporting a concerning ratio of just 78%.

  • Safety Concerns: The report highlights over 5,000 injuries reported among employees across various sectors, indicating a pressing need for improved safety measures and practices.

  • Third-Party Assurance Coverage: There is a low level of third-party assurance on environmental metrics, with only a small number of companies opting for assurance on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This is expected to change as mandated assurance requirements come into effect.
